CASTLEFORD TRIAL
It was a beautiful frosty, sunny morning for our Castleford
event, but unfortunately our Landy decided it didn't want to go
with us and refused to start, so it was a quick switch of the
gear into the car and off we went.
We arrived to find Andy Morse, our first aider, finishing
putting signs and arrows up, and Clerk of the Course Sarah in a
panic because the local kids had removed half the sticks during
the night - they always do that at Castleford. Sarah - I think
they use them for fuel!
I got to work signing on the 32 entries which included 7
novices, 7 double entries and 4 Range Rovers. We were pleased to
welcome several YROC entries as well. The 15 section trial began
at 10.30 and competitors were to do 8 sections before lunch
break.
I had a walk round, leaving Andy to install new lights and first
aid box in the trailer, stopping to marshal a section for a
double entry who hadn't made it before the marshals had moved
on. I then helped Sarah to pull out some completed sections.
After a short lunch break, trialling re-commenced and we had a
couple of early retirements, Steve Oliver and Rob Gill, who had
oil coining out of their motor from everywhere they said. Other
retirements included Andrew Kitchen, Chris Riley and Colin
Hancock who had managed to complete 14 sections, but had had
enough after having carburettor problems all day.
Glen McKeith did manage to finish, despite an ominous clanking
which turned out to be a broken diff.
Whilst waiting to collect the cards, we watched Gary Docherty
roll very gracefully onto his side, but he was soon back on 4
wheels with only a bent bumper.
The cards were soon all in, sections all pulled and results
added up, followed by prize giving. Congratulations to Colin
Cavalier who hasn't entered for a while, but who came first
overall - you haven't lost your touch Colin! I think Colin's
been building a trophy room extension onto his house.
Finally, thanks to all who helped in any way to make the day a
very enjoyable one.
